The Artful Escape is a puzzle game where the player must use celestial beings and their gravitational powers to guide a ball through a maze.
The the artful escape controversy is the debate about whether or not the game was actually made by a woman.
Robby is obsessed with video games. When he isn’t playing them, he is either talking about them on social media or persuading others to take up a controller. He’s on the internet so often that he could almost… Continue reading
- The Artful Escape is a visually and sonically stunning experience.
- It recounts the tale of finding one’s true self.
- It’s more of a story adventure than a platformer.
The Artful Escape is a musical platformer with a compelling yet humorous story. It recounts the tale of Francis Vendetti, a young guitar prodigy who, like his renowned uncle before him, is expected to become a great folk performer.
You can plainly see him straining with this laid-out route that others have created in his place the evening before his first major performance. However, a chance presents itself that will transport Francis to new cosmic horizons and enable him to really know himself.
Onward to the Extraordinary Cosmic
Don’t be concerned about your future.
When Francis arrives to his Calypso house and prepares to retire for the night, he is accosted by a weird creature that resembles a floating brain-in-a-jar with tentacles. He is unfazed by this apparition and decides to accompany it and a few humanoid beings on a journey through the universe’ dilated pupils.
They offer him a voyage of self-discovery and the opportunity to see and hear things he could never imagine. But first, he’ll have to sign a contract. We don’t want to be held responsible if he melts his brain or drifts off into space, do we?
“Please sign the laserwork,” says the narrator.
Now, reaching to this stage takes approximately an hour, and impatient gamers may opt out, but they’ll lose out on the mind-blowingly beautiful sights that follow as soon as we begin journeying through the Cosmic Extraordinary and beyond with our holographic guitar.
This is when the “platforming” that I’ve seen referenced in many brief copies of the game or when it was teased before release comes into play. However, I don’t believe that statement really describes the situation.
This isn’t a platformer.
Because, in my opinion, The Artful Escape is a platformer in the same way that Super Mario games are narrative adventures. Sure, you’ll have to leap a few times, but it’s just to get the narrative moving and show us all the lovely things the game has to offer.
Francis can double jump and use a mid-air strum to float a little farther, but the leaps are seldom tough, and even if you fall into the depths of a level, you’ll respawn only feet away from where you died.
But there are three compelling reasons to play The Artful Escape, so let’s go through them.
The writing is strong and entertaining.
This outfit is as bold as it gets. It’s as if he’s wearing a Nintendo Power Glove all over his body.
Francis is taken to intriguing places and has the opportunity to converse with progressively more fascinating animals as the tale progresses. Normally, you travel through a back-and-forth by clicking a single button, but The Artful Escape offers you an option each time it enters personal territory.
After all, this is a voyage of rediscovery, and Francis is rediscovering who he really is, or rather, who he aspires to be. You get to choose a new name for yourself and create your own history, from where you came from to the most significant accomplishment you’ve ever accomplished, but it’s all made up and the possibilities vary from moderately plausible to wildly fantastic.
Unfortunately, his deception was not worth a chance.
People who are acquainted with Night School’s indie hits (Oxenfree, Afterparty) may now make a double-take when they encounter a screenshot like the one above with speech bubbles. The aesthetic is unmistakably similar, as is the witty language, but make no mistake: this is Beethoven & Dinosaur’s debut game, and they nailed it!
Your eyes will be melted by the sights.
This is Flower Power in action!
Rarely do you come across a game with such a unique look. The Artful Escape is guaranteed to wow you with its visual extravaganza, which includes everything from colorful handpainted backdrops to dazzling laser displays. There are no two settings identical, and it seems as though what we’re witnessing was captured during an LSD-fueled lucid dream.
From the luminous planet Musea to the purple snowy mountainsides and vivid pink jungles, it’s no surprise that every character in the game wears a pair of spectacles; their eyes have seen a lot.
Not only are the surroundings beautiful, but the “action” setpieces are as well, with one of my favorites being a race on the back of a gigantic turtle in which you use your abilities to accelerate things up.
Cowabunga!
When the single aesthetic flaw in the whole game is that “the characters move strangely,” you know you’re dealing with a work of art.
The music is fantastic!
When a game is completely based on music, it’s only natural that the playlist and sound design were given a lot of thought. Fair warning: you’ll hear electrical guitar riffs throughout the journey, and if the sound bothers you, the game may not be for you.
I liked how the game began with a Bob Dylan-like tune (which was very catchy) and progressed to full-on electric rock with extravagant light displays.
It should also come as no surprise that the gameplay is rhythm-based, with each of the five buttons representing a distinct riff. To unlock portals, expand bridges, or compete with gorgeous gelatinous moths, all you have to do is play a game of Simon Says.
You’re just asking for treble now.
There’s no need to be concerned if you don’t have a great sense of rhythm or if your memory isn’t the greatest. You may play the notes as they light up in the example, and you can try again if you make a mistake with no negative repercussions. The Artful Escape wants you to finish the trip, therefore it won’t put anything in your way to prevent you from doing so.
The voice acting is excellent as well, although I do have one complaint: some of the speech lines were missing just four or five times throughout the game. However, since the rest of the game is so well-polished and bug-free, it’s hardly visible.
Achievements and Completion
The Artful Escape isn’t a lengthy game, but it’s a memorable one. The game will take you about 4 hours to complete, perhaps 5 if you take your time and enjoy the views.
The majority of the accomplishments will be earned simply by playing the game, with just a handful needing help. If you still need assistance, check out our Achievement Guide!

Pros A fantastic tale that takes you to the furthest reaches of the cosmos and back. Visually beautiful with excellent sound design and voice performance. There are several voice lines that are missing. Francis’ animation seems to be strange.
