This was the period when GE and Krupp teamed together to develop a fuel-efficient lightweight bodyshell construction. In 1993, Genesis unveiled the finished product to the general audience. The Amtrak Monocoque Diesel – 103 MPH/AMD-103 was dubbed the P40DC/Genesis after it was renamed the Amtrak Monocoque Diesel – 103 MPH/AMD-103. GE went on to produce 44 of these locomotives, with several of them being restored subsequently.
Two years later, the AMD-110 Dual Mode/Hybrid locomotive, the second iteration of this type, was introduced. It had an AC motor that could achieve speeds of up to 110 miles per hour. Following that, the final version was introduced to the market under the model designation P42DC, which is still in use today.
